No we dont have right to put load on public sites , just 5 users is not a problem

Anbalagan Vivek: On a serious note you can definitely test a Social Networking application. THe thing to watch out for is the cost involved during the performance activity,as the desired load generation would be significantly high.The choice of the tool depends on that. Watch out your budget.HP is also available on cloud, so may be you want to track the duration of your test execution cycle too.

I heard that FB developers uses FBML language, so had a thought different social networking sites may use different markup language. My next thought was can we record it using a standard tool? Then i got to know that social networking site uses api's for most of the calls. Not sure how it works, and its do-able. Appreciate all your inputs

Anbalagan Vivek: You may use any development kit in the world, but the communication has to be over HTTP and thats what the tools capture: The H TTP traffic,regardless of the platform on which the development is done.

I believe that domain is social n/wing not the technology.. when we talk about a highly technological sites like FB then performing performance testing is not as simple as normal web based applications. I agree with gaurav that the communication matters and for all web based its HTTP. But the complexity comes when there is AMF over HTTP/ RTMP over HTTP.... so same becomes the case in FB........
