yes it is possible do performance testing for excel application using load runner..... first of all do the Protocol communication would be something you have to check with the developer to see what is the best option to record. After that you can choose the correct protocol for recording. It may also be possible technology used may not be supported, but we would be able to tell you if you can find out and for this way you get any problem simple you do this step to replace it in the bin folder of the LoadRunner directory, back the original DLL first. And then try do recording in selected excel file...

yes possible. I have done tonnes of such testing. Excel smartview plugin testing and lots of other kind of pulgin. but basically backend call was transferring data via http protocol.
